Verdict: WATCH – José is worth it
The Mourinho documentary is a fun watch for obvious reasons.
First of all, what a character. The early days in Chelsea, that iconic press conference where he calls himself the special one, the love/hate relationship with the media and the fans. No other manager had this kind of appeal and constant chatter around him.
For football fans, there are tons of little gems there. Zlatan revealing private conversations with Mourinho, Lampard talking about José leaving and how they all practically cried like babies. It’s also a fun trip down memory lane: Figo staying on for another season just to work with José, seeing how close he was to the Inter players, and how the Madrid move almost didn’t happen.
If you’re a United fan, it’s a hard watch. First, that last minute Porto goal in 2004 will always be a gut punch. Then the revelation that he has a deal with Sir Alex: Mourinho was meant to replace Ferguson when he retired. As we all know, Abramovich wanted him back at Chelsea, and he couldn’t say no. And finally, the years he did spend at United didn’t live up to the expectations.
However, you don’t have to care about football to enjoy this documentary. First, it’s essentially a glimpse into that elite mentality. That “why not me?” attitude. Mourinho is also the guy who never wants a day off, always looks for the next challenge, and pretty much sees himself doing this till he drops.
Then there’s the other side of José, the one that slowly reveals itself. When asked about his father, he says the main difference between them is that “everybody loved my father”. Deep down he’s still that kid that feels like an outsider. The kid that just wants to be loved.
