Verdict: WATCH – if you’re into English football
The Jamie Vardy documentary ticks all the boxes: a Cinderella story with impossible odds, a troublemaker who drinks and gets into the occasional fight, and a story of one season we’re never likely to see again.
That’s the main impression I’m left with: This is the story of the 2015/2016 season. Nothing and no one is bigger than that. As unlikely as Vardy’s own ascent is, it pales in comparison with what the team achieved that year.
The documentary takes you through it all. Vardy’s childhood, his full-time job at the factory, and how he basically gave up on football. At least, he gave up on Premier League football. His path from non-league football at Stockbridge, through Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town, didn’t exactly shout “Premier League”. And then he joined Leicester City and the rest is history.
For football fans, it’s yet another trip down memory lane from Netflix. Vardy matching and then breaking Van Nistelrooy’s 10-goal streak. Spurs nearly winning the title themselves before finishing third. Mahrez being part of that Leicester team before joining Manchester City. It’s a bit of nostalgia that’s always nice to revisit.
It’s also a reminder of how quickly things can change. Leicester is nowhere near the Premier League – they’re currently in League One (third tier). Spurs just about avoided relegation last season. If anything, it makes you appreciate the dominance of the top teams even more.
As for Vardy himself, once we put aside all the usual talk of hard work and having someone believing in you, he does come up with one interesting insight. When looking at his trophy cabinet, he realises how fragile the whole thing is: from his agent to the scouts to the managers, through the sheer luck of no major injuries, it was always just one misstep from never happening.
For the non-football fan, let alone sports fan, it’s hard to recommend. The Jordan and Rafa documentaries come first. For Premier League lovers, it’s mostly a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most incredible seasons in English football. One that still feels like a dream.
